Description
Sam Brannan (1819-1889), was an early Mormon pioneer who came to California in 1846, was the first to carry word of the gold discovery to San Francisco, and had much to do with the development of both San Francisco and Sacramento. He also published the former city's first newspaper, the California Star, and was president of San Francisco's 1851 Vigilance Committee.
John Augustus Sutter (1803-1880), was a German-born Swiss pioneer of California, known for establishing Sutter's Fort in what is now Sacramento. Although he became famous following the discovery of gold by his employee James W. Marshall, Sutter saw his own business ventures fail during the California Gold Rush.
James Ben Ali Haggin (1822-1914) was an American attorney, rancher, investor, and a major owner/breeder in the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. Haggin made a fortune in the aftermath of the California Gold Rush and was a multi-millionaire by 1880.
Lloyd Tevis (1824-1899) was a banker and capitalist who served as president of Wells Fargo & Company from 1872 to 1892.
The collection San Francisco and Sacramento Deeds, 1851 to 1864 consists of deeds transferring property, finances and repaying debts. These transfers happened around properties and people in the cities of San Francisco and Sacramento. Many of the deeds were transfers between well-known businessmen and property holders. Some of the names repeated through this collection are: John A. Sutter, Sam Brannan, Lloyd Tevis, William S. Mesick, James B. Haggin, Eugene F. Gillespie, Lewis Sanders, Jr., and Philip L. Edwards.
