Description
This circa-1942 shot shows the interior of the Hippodrome Theater. The 1013 K Street venue had changed much since its opening in 1913, when it was known as the Empress. At that time, it provided vaudeville-style entertainment and the stage occupied a great part of the theater. With the decline of vaudeville, the theater changed its name to the Hippodrome and gradually shifted to movies. In 1928, along with the addition of 1,800 new seats, the theater underwent a massive refit to accommodate the burgeoning sound and movie projection technology of the day. It became the Crest Theater in 1949.
