Description
This photograph of the Southern Pacific Railroad Bridge, as taken from the west bank of the Sacramento River, was shot in 1894. Built in 1892/93, it was the second Southern Pacific span, and third overall, to be built at this very spot. It was replaced in 1910 with a new structure. During the construction of that bridge, several primeval objects were discovered in the riverbed: railroad ties and rails, human and animal bones (the latter the result of a nearby slaughterhouse), and several large oak timbers. The Southern Pacific Railroad's depot, referred to at the time as the Arcade Station, rests in the background.
