Description
This collection includes approximately 40,000 photographs by commercial photographer Ralph Morris, who worked in the Los Angeles area from 1939-1981. His advertising and industrial clients included department stores, restaurants, the automobile and petroleum industries as well as business executives. Also included is the Luckhaus Studio collection of architecture, fashion, the movie industry, sports and street scenes, images which Morris obtained in 1939.
Clifford Clinton, founder of the Clifton's chain, opened L.A.'s first cafeteria, The Cafeteria of the Golden Rule, on Olive Street. In 1939, Cafeteria of the Golden Rule was transformed into the Pacific Seas and redecorated in the Polynesian motif shown here. The restaurant closed in 1960 and was later razed.
Diners have filled one of the rooms of the popular eatery, Clifton's "Pacific Seas" Cafeteria, located at 618 S. Olive Street. The cafeteria's decor, intended to evoke a Polynesian setting, includes floral wallpaper, fake flowers and palm trees, baskets, and the Rain Hut, visible in the background, where, according to the posted signs, it "rains approx. every 20 min."
