Description
The composition depicts the Emperor and his male entourage in the room at right seated on chairs at a table, while the Empress sits on a low dais in the alcove at left, attended by 15 women. The two rooms are of different architectural styles, with the men surrounded by arched glass sash windows and the women by traditional sliding panels, where small glass panes have replaced the sheets of shoji paper. A brilliantly colored repetitive pattern carpet unites the two spaces visually, and declares an underlying modern look to the interior. Each chamber has an elaborate flower arrangement and trays of special foods. Red lacquered wine cups are being filled by women carrying decorated ladles.
