Description
View 1 (2018-1625). Trained stage team, #1. Shows old rock away stage (possibly Pine Ridge Stage) pulled by six-horse team -- view 2 (2018-1626). Stage on grade camera set back, # 2. Shows stagecoach, four-horse team -- view 3 (2018-1627). Changing at Saddle or Cressman's from stage to bob sled -- view 4 (2018-1628). Starting out with fresh team -- view 5 (2018-1629). Showing some of the heavy shoveling necessary to open up the road -- view 6 (2018-1630). Showing snow in front of store and post office at Shaver -- view 7 (2018-1631). Shows the first sight of the sawmill from the stage road coming into Shaver (not a snow scene) -- view 8 (2018-1632). Shows first 4 hourses & light stage over broken road. Series of 8 postcards numbered by photographer and referenced to accompanying manuscript "The memory of an old timer & an early photographer." Images and manuscript describe journey from Fresno to Shaver Lake; first by stage to the Saddle or Cressman's where change to bobsled; on to Shaver Lake and saw mill. Manley Freeman White worked April-December in the logging camp at Shaver Lake; taking photographs in his spare time. C.B. Swift and Charles B. Shaver owned the Fresno Flume and Irrigation Company; built a dam on Stevenson Creek forming Shaver Lake, built two mills and flume to transport lumber from Shaver Lake to Clovis (where had planing mills, box factory, dry kilns).
