Elizabeth S. Benton;
Born in 1818 in Connecticut. Arrived in San Francisco in 1849. Settled in Sacramento, founding the First Congregational Church in 1851. Moved to San Francisco in 1864 as pastor in church, was professor of Biblical literature at Pacific Theological Seminary. Was founding trustee of College of California (University of California). Elected in 1863 to California State Senate for Sacramento. Died in 1892.
