Description
Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1947, Brian Crawford is a prolific author, sailor, local historian, and open space activist. In this oral history, Brian details the Crawford family history, which he has traced back over 1500 years. He discusses his childhood growing up in Ohio, his disconnect from the region's religious conservatism, and the love of oceanography and spirit of adventure that first brought him to California. After coming to San Francisco for the Summer of Love in 1967, Brian spent several years hitchhiking around the western United States before joining a para-naval group to become a sailor. His adventures took him all over the world, from Nova Scotia to the South Pacific to Australia. In 1986, Brian settled in Marin County with his wife Linda and son Nathan. As an active scholar of Marin County history, Brian has given three presentations for the Mill Valley Historical Society's First Wednesday speaker series and written five books on the history of Marin County, in addition to several memoirs and short stories. As an advocate for the preservation of open spaces, he has played an instrumental role in the creation of several San Anselmo hiking trails. He is chairman of the Sorich Park Area Residents and the San Anselmo Trails Subcommittee, serves on the San Anselmo Open Space Committee, and volunteers with the Friends of Faudé Park and the Friends of Sorich Park.
