Description
Resting at the southeast corner of Sixth and J Streets, the Ramona Hotel and several of its business tenants are shown in this 1960 photograph. Visible businesses include the California Grocery at 604 J Street, Norm’s Pawnshop at 602 J Street and the VF Club at 600 J Street. The VF Club was operated by Vera Castaldo, a native of the Chicago-area. The bar’s namesake, “VF,” came from the first letter of Vera’s first name and that of her husband, Frank, a welder for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Norm’s namesake was its owner, Norman Kaufman. In the foreground, men are seated, waiting for busses, and trash sits on the sidewalk and street.
