Description
Republican mural, Beechmount Avenue/Falls Road, West Belfast, 1990. Mural commemorates Easter 1916 with image at top of GPO in Dublin burning during the Rising; phoenix rising from the ashes. Underneath, roll of honour of local battalion IRA (Irish Republican Army); central image, map of Ireland, manacled hand (manacle made in Britain) holding Easter lily. Emblems of the four provinces of Ireland around the central image; 'Free Ireland'. Street sign: Beechmount Avenue/RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) Avenue (so-called because IRA launched RPG attack on police landrover). Sign on lamp post: Alcohol Free Area.
