Description
Photograph of Richfield Building at 555 South Flower Street, Los Angeles, 1953. "A modernized ground floor and more office space for a growing number of employees were completed today at the Richfield Building, home office of Richfield Oil Corporation in an extensive remodeling project started last January. -- Streamlining the familiar downtown landmark at Sixth Street and Flower Street is a first floor facing of black granite and terra cotta, replacing ornamentation which was in vogue when the building was erected in 1929. -- New, modern display windows facing on both Flower Street and Sixth Street run full depth with the corner windows displaying a large showroom for special exhibits. Interior changes have converted space formerly used for stores into new office space for the Richfield machine accounting section, telephone department, and other new offices and a new coffee shop for employees. -- Need for additional office space has increased steadily over the past ten years, Richfield officials said. The company now occupies all of the space in the building. -- Plans for the remodeling work were drawn by Architect Stiles Clements and the Guy F. Atkinson Company was the contractor." -- typed note attached to verso, dated 15 January 1953.
