Description
Photograph of the USS Relief (1896) near Long Beach coastline, [s.d.]. At center, the large steamer is seen moving through the calm water. Two decks can be seen on the side of the ship, and several columns and rails are visible on each deck. Also, numerous windows and doors can be seen leading to the interior of the steamer. Several passengers can be seen moving along both decks of the ship. At the top of the upper deck, three large lifeboats are visible. On either side of the upper deck, a large pole and several wires can be seen. Between these poles, a tall smoke stack is visible emitting a thick cloud of black smoke into the sky. In the lower right foreground is a portion of another ship with both civilians and naval personnel visible, while buildings are visible along the shore in the background. Originally, the ship was named "John Englis" and, from 1898 to 1902, served as a US Army hospital ship. In 1902, she was renamed "Relief" and transferred to the US Navy and served as a Navy hospital ship. In 1918, the vessel was renamed "Repose".
