Description
This November 1940 photograph shows Sacramento’s annual Christmas Parade as it proceeds east on K Street between Sixth and Seventh. Sponsored by the Sacramento Bee, the Sacramento Retail Merchants’ Association and the Downtown Improvement Association, the parade, which ran from Fifth and K streets to 12th and K streets and back to Plaza Park, was started in 1932 as a way to welcome the Christmas season. Included in the festivities were a children’s costume contest, a pet parade, and a children-only vaudeville show at the Memorial Auditorium. Visible Buildings and businesses include the Liberty Theatre at 617 K St., the Capitol Theatre at 615 K St., Heeseman Men's Clothing Store at 619 1/2 K St., and Savin Sol Men's Clothing Shop at 609 K St. The films “Maryland” and “Angels with Dirty Faces” with James Cagney and Pat O'Brien, were playing at the Liberty Theatre, while “Too Many Girls,” starring Lucille Ball and Frances Langford, and “Prairie Law,” starring George O'Brien, were being shown at the Capitol Theatre.
