Description
Photograph. "Almost with simplicity it's called the 'Downtown Library,' this deceptively modest looking building on a rise of land betwen Grand and Flower adn off Fifth... the name is simple, its purposes are multiple... from microfilms to musical masterpieces, to novels to patents, what is to be remembered by man most likely can be found there... set now amidst the commercial heart of the city, the Library is on a five-acre site, landscaped with laurel and scanthus and olive and palm and cypress trees... over the entrance are sculptures... inside the first school bell... a mosaic of Spanish tile in geometric and solar design ornaments the pyramid is a sculpture hand bearing a torch... correct capstone for the 'Downtown Library.'" -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated 27 August 1961.
