Description
Batik artist, Pang Vang Khang (partially visible, wearing traditional HMong dress), folds a long piece of batik cloth prior to dyeing. This specific design will be covered with appliqué and used to create the bottom section of skirts for the Green HMong groups in Xiangkhouang province in Laos. The designs showcases zig-zag mountains and rivers telling the story of HMong diaspora and migration, crossing rivers to live in the mountains. Handwritten inscriptions on mat board read, (above photograph:) "Folding the long batik cloth before dying[sic]." (below photograph:) "Making a skirt #4," "Long piece of cloth is completely waxed," "1984 / Lewis." Date derived from inscription on mat board recto.
