McCaffery was a well-known postmodern literary critic and professor at SDSU. He interviewed Kathy Acker, a well-known postmodern and feminist writer who lived in both San Diego and San Francisco for periods of time and taught at UCSD, UCSB, San Francisco Art Institute and the CA Institute of Arts
