Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
Major league football came to Los Angeles in 1946, when the Los Angeles Dons of the All American Football Conference began play. They faced competition beyond the AAFC: Dan Reeves had just moved his NFL Cleveland Rams to L.A. The Dons lasted all of four seasons; when the league folded, the Cleveland Browns, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Baltimore Colts were absorbed into the NFL. Here, Dons half-back Walter Heap, leaps at the camera. Photo dated: December 8, 1947.
