Description
Guerrillas from the Farabundo Martí Liberation People's Forces (FPL) in the main plaza after taking control of La Palma, El Salvador, a town in northern Chalatenango, ten miles from the Honduras border and 60 miles north of the capital. Some fighters are holding flags with the initials of guerrilla organizations such as FPL and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). Others hold the white and blue striped flag of El Salvador with the slogan "God union freedom." A barely legible banner reads, "Revolutionaries Heroes of January." All the fighters hold an assault rifle and are standing up. Some have a backpack on their shoulders. The guerrilas had just concluded a successful campaign in January 1983 taking Berlín, San Agustín, and La Palma.
