Description
Henriette Renaud and Pierre Pellier were married in St. Hippolyte, France, in 1856. Shortly thereafter they sailed for San Francisco. It is believed that they came to San Jose by way of Alviso. They brought nursery stock cuttings of grapes and scions of la petite prune d'Agen. This particular French prune, La petite prune d'Agen, already an international favourite variety, was to play an important role in the agricultural history of the Santa Clara Valley. In the spring time the prune's beautiful white blossoms could be seen for miles around. The Pelliers lived in San Jose briefly before moving to Warm Springs, approximately 8 miles northeast of San Jose. About 1861 they bought 460 acres in Evergreen and established their home, vineyard, orchards and fields. They built their house on a sloping hill overlooking their land. The Pelliers were the parents of five children, a son (who died at a young age) and four daughters. The girls attended The College of Notre Dame and Henriette saw to additional instruction in music, drawing and painting. Pellier is portrayed in what appears to be a simple day dress. The dress is of unidentified dark-striped fabric with plain sleeves and a stand-up collar with narrow, white, frilled edging and a broach at the neckline. Her hair is parted down the middle and pulled tightly back to reveal drop earrings.
