Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 The first skateboards were little more than roller-skate wheels attached to clunky wooden boards. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, with the advent of mass-produced boards, skateboarding grew beyond southern California's beach cities. By the time of the first contests in the early 1960s--and by the time Jan & Dean scored a hit with "Sidewalk Surfin" in 1964--skateboard culture was poised to expand world-wide. Photo dated: August 2, 1966.
