Photograph of the inscription on "El Morro" rock, Mesa Encantada, New Mexico, ca.1898. The inscription from 1692 translates as "Here was the General de Vargas who conquered for the Holy Faith and the Royal Crown all of New Mexico at his own expense. In the year of our Lord, 1692." The original inscription reads "Aqui [...] Gen[...] el Vargas, qui conquisto anras[?] Sr[?] Fe. yalar[?] corona todo el Nuevo Mexico a su costa, año D[ei] 1692". Additional writing includes: ..."iamson, July 8 1858, Ohio", "Isaac T. Holland, July 8 1858, [...] train".... Photoprint reads: "S. L. Obistio Co."
