Description
Photograph shows a group of teenager girls gathered outdoors. They are at a Y.W.C.A Younger Girls Conference. The conference is possibly located at Asilomar. On verso: "Part of the gang on the Ad. Bldg. steps-Y.W.C.A. Younger Girls Conference June, 1946." Phoebe Apperson Hearst wanted a permanent conference site for the national YWCA association. She negotiated with the Pacific Improvement Co. to donate 30 acres of pine forests and sand dunes near Pacific Grove, California so that Asilomar could be built. The buildings were designed by Julia Morgan during 1913-1928. The name is a mix of two Spanish words meaning refuge by the sea.
