Microfilm of a thesis entitled "The General Trends and Characteristics of Utah Pioneer Dress from 1847-1875," written by Fairfax Proudfit Walkup for her M.A. from the University of Utah in 1947. Based on research from the Utah Pioneer Costume and Manners Research Project, the paper set out to "discover in what particulars Utah pioneer dress followed the prevailing general lines and characteristics of current fashions and why it did so" . The study focused on women's dress, including "whole costumes... to items of women's underwear- chemises...corsets, drawers...nightgowns, petticoats, and stockings and to certain items of children's clothing." Forms part of the Manuscripts Department's Mormon file, c.1805-1995. Dr. Fairfax Proudfit Walkup (1887-1976) was an educator, designer, and playwright. She earned a B.A. from Vassar in 1927 and her M.A. (1947) and PhD (1951) from the University of Utah. Active in costume design for the stage, she also served as the dean of the Pasadena Playhouse and founded its Children's Theatre. Walkup was the author of Dressing the Part: A History of Costume for the Theatre (1938). She died in California in 1976.
