Description
Discoveries in mathematics are depicted in this mural at Griffith Observatory. The Greek figure, Poppus of Alexandria, is holding a circle containing various geometric forms. Behind him is the Egyptian God Thoth, the inventor of the science of astronomy. The Arab looking at the slab typifies the Arab contribution to the system of numeration and algebra. The seated man is representative of Physics, relating to the science treating of properties of matter and energy according to the laws of natural philosophy. The little figure above is coming to the earth from the infinite. To the right is Sir Isaac Newton. The three medieval figures are students of natural philosophy. Mural by Hugo Ballin.
