Description
Three amateur video clips and an editorial documentary: 00:00:00-00:41:26: Operation Rescue anti-abortion protest of Family Planning Associates (a clinic), West 6th Street and South Westmoreland Avenue, mid-Wilshire district, Los Angeles, California, 1989 April 15, resulting in more than 240 arrests. An estimated 1,200 demonstrators and 340 police officers were present at the demonstration as well Los Angeles Police Department Chief Daryl Gates and Los Angeles City council members Zev Yaroslavsky, Ruth Galanter and Michael Woo. The City Council had passed a resolution on 1988 November 14 for the LAPD to vigorously enforce the law against Operation Rescue which had organized a series of protests in cities across the nation. The resolution had been presented by Michael Woo, seconded by Joy Picus, and adopted by Ruth Galanter, Gloria Molina and Joel Wachs. ❧ 00:41:26-00:54:56: Pro-Life protest, American Women's Medical Group, 3827 West Washington Boulevard, Los Angeles, California, 1989 June 10. ❧ 00:54:56-00:56:33: Operation Rescue protest, Family Planning Associates, West 6th Street and South Westmoreland Avenue, mid-Wilshire district, Los Angeles, California, 1990 April 14. This clip includes an interview of one of the protestors, Veronica Macias (01:04:17-01:11:50), who described the event and showed her injuries on 1990 April 19. ❧ 01:23:07-01:51:52: "The brutal truth: tyranny in America" (CDR Communications, Inc. and American Portrait Films, inc., 1990), a documentary on the anti-abortion "rescue movement" includes clips of demonstrations in Atlanta, Georgia (1988 October), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1989 March 11), Los Angeles, California (1989 March 25, 1989 June 10), Chesapeake, Virginia (1989 June 11), and West Hartford, Connecticut (1989 June 17). Also included are interviews of Joseph L. Foreman (Montreat, North Carolina), Michael Grumbine (Whittier, California), Rosemary Winters (Torrance, California), Deborah Grumbine (Whittier, California), William Calvin (Morris Township, New Jersey), Norman Weslin (Mount Lake Terrace, Washington), Lianne Azevedo (Chicoppee, Massachusetts), Brian Phaneuf (Nashua, New Hampshire), Jim Altham (Hamden, Connecticut), Rosanna Weissert (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Connie Jones (Oakdale, Pennsylvania), Tammy Cable (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Sandy Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), William B. Allen (Washington, DC), J. Donald Varela (Chesapeake, Virginia), Randall A. Terry, Paul H. Schenck (Buffalo, New York), Jay Sekulow, Joan Andrews, KIeith Tucci, Al Howard (Long Beach, California), and speech by Samuel B. Casey, and clips of Martin Luther King during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. . ❧ The video containing these clips was donated anonymously to the Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department on 1991 May 1. PART OF A SERIES: The staff of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher coordinated witness interviews and conducted an extensive review of complaints filed against LAPD officers. Included in the series are summaries of witness interviews, statistics and investigative reports related to citizen complaints, an analysis on adjudicated cases involving use-of-force complaints, reports regarding LAPD's recruitment of African American officers and community oriented policing, and an excerpt from Malcolm Sparrow's Beyond 9-1-1. Also included are materials related to the firm's work product, including attorney notes, work plans, memoranda, and drafts of chapters for the Commission report.
