A California Black Oak (Quercus kelloggii) on ridge east of Sugar Pine, Mariposa County, about 4500 feet elevation with thrifty western yellow pine reproduction 35 years old in background. Note Incense Cedar seedlings coming up in the mat of Bear clover in the foreground. The oak is 49" diameter at breast height and has 16 rings in the last inch of growth. The bark is lighter color than usual with this species although many trees like this were seen in this vicinity. May, 1925
