Description
Information from note on back of photo reads: The Smith Home - This is the oldest house in El Monte. It was built by Mrs. Almira Hale and her son and daughter, Moses and Almira Hale. Mrs. Hale's husband had died while the family was crossing the plains and is buried near Mountain Meadows, Utah. This was in 1849. This house was built the same year. Mrs. Hale later married Nickie Smith. She, and her children homesteaded 160 acres here and had about 300 Indians on the ranch. Most of them went to the war in Owens Valley in 1865. Bertha Cuddleback, first white child born in El Monte was born here. Mrs,. Pio Pico, living on Whittier Blvd. made the first dress for this little girl. Additional information: Gay's Lion Farm was built just to the east of the house. Photo dated: June 25, 1922.
