Photograph caption dated December 23, 1981 reads, "About 500 AFL-CIO union supporters turn out for a noon rally yesterday at AFL-CIO headquarters near downtown Los Angeles in support of the Polish labor union Solidarity. A top-ranking labor executive called on the trade union movement to provide more than rhetoric in support of the beleaguered Polish workers. "What we are going to suggest is a broad appeal for financial help as well," said William Robertson, executive director of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. He said the national AFL-CIO already had pledged $250,000 to the Polish workers' cause. Poland's government has declared martial law, prompting widespread strikes by union members there."
