Description
Detailed, close-up view of a completed batik design on a section of a baby carrier. This section, called Plawv cev nyas (Green HMong) or Plawv cev nyias (White HMong), refers to the heart of the baby carrier body (center). The batik design (shown in dark blue) features x-shaped motifs: hook (tus khawb), fence (laj kab), and borders surrounded with seeds (noob). Typed label affixed to the mat board above the photograph reads, "Baby-carrier center (plawv cev nyas). The fabric has been dyed with an indigo colored dye, and the wax has been washed out with boiling water. The areas where the wax has been washed out remain the color of the original fabric. The zig-zag lines are where the appliqué[sic] will be sewn." Handwritten inscription on the mat board beneath the photograph reads, "Baby-carrier batik center, dyed and washed. (white fabric)." Date derived from stamp on mat board verso. Notes on verso read: "Baby carrier #4 [handwritten pencil, upper left verso]; HMong Baby Carrier #2 (Photo 2), Lewis Judy, *HMO.4049.00* Fall 2002 [printed label, upper left verso]; L.F.C. [handwritten black ink, bottom right verso]; FEB 12 1987 [stamped red ink, bottom right vero]" Numbering on verso inconsistent. Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Baby carrier and seed pillows (18 photos)
