Description
Interview of Austin Lambert, a retired engineer who worked for Western Pacific Railroad for 45 years. Lambert describes how he worked on steam trains and how he controlled their speed. He mentions how most men working on the railroad had nicknames, and his name was "Alkali" instead of Austin. The interview then focuses on accidents--many had to do with fires on trains and he reflects on a fellow engineer and fireman who were killed. Lambert mentions seeing a lot of hobos while he worked, although they never bothered him and sometimes helped put out fires. He further reflects how there are not many Western Pacific employees left. The interview concludes with Lambert showing the interviewer a book about the different types of train engines.
