Thought for the day by Charles Handy on how authority must be earned by managers and leaders. Handy begins the thought discussing how a manager was brought in from the corporate sector to impose a business-like order onto the London Business School, and how this new hire eventually had to negotiate with the faculty and staff at the Business School in order to bring about the changes that would result in more efficient and streamlined operations. Handy concludes from this scenario that a manager has to earn authority from the very people over whom he/she will exercise it; in other words, the principle of governing only with the consent of the governed. Consequently, Handy cautions that one should not assume authority and the power that comes with it, as that will result in management by fear. Instead, managers should earn the authority of their colleagues.
