Description
Photograph of a view of commercial "C" street in Virginia City, Nevada, showing the hills in the background, ca.1935. The paved street is shown at center, running from the left foreground to the center distance, with automobiles parked intermittently along the plank sidewalk to either side. Two- and three-story brick commercial shops run the length of the street, their display windows shaded by awnings. To the right, one of the buildings features the sign "Hotel Virgi[?]". To the left, a sign that reads "Shoe house" can be seen reflected in a shop window. On the same side of the street, another shop bears a sign that reads "[?] Inc. Groceries". Farther down the street, a final sign reads "[C]rystal". A hillside littered by small rocks can be seen in the distance, sloping down to the right. Photoprint reads: "This was one of the richest mining camps in history. The mines under this city produced 900 million dollars worth of gold and silver. There are 600 miles of tunneling under the city and vicinity".
