Description
California utilities started during the Gold Rush era with two major, competing firms “The San Francisco Gas and Electric” and “California Gas and Electric” which, in 1905, merged to become PG&E.
In 1906, PG&E also merged with the Sacramento City Street Railway.
Pictured in this photograph from 1912 is one of PG&E’s Steam and Electric Stations.
This building still stands. Now empty, it can be seen along the Sacramento River bike trail. The State of California is considering adding it to the railroad museum complex. This building and the old style transformer are next to the river and can be seen from the I-5.
