Photograph caption dated December 9, 1938 reads, "Photo shows the restaurant, service station and crude oil tank truck that were destroyed by flames following an explosion early today at Slauson and Boyle avenues. Firemen said they believed the blast was caused by fumes of the crude oil, which was being unloaded from the truck to a storage drum, accumulating in the cafe kitchen and being ignited by the pilot light of a gas range. A man and his mother escaped death in the blast and fire."
