Description
Photograph of a group of five young Hopi Indian girls with an old Hopi Indian man on crude stone steps in the village of Shonguapavi, ca.1901. Everyone is sitting except for two of the girls. The girls' hair is all styled in the same manner -- rolled into two sections and tied protruding from the sides of their heads. They all wear shawls or blankets draped over their shoulders and numerous beaded necklaces. Their hands are generally held together in front of each one. The old man, who sits on a step higher than the girls is wearing a shirt, blanket, and shoes. An adobe dwelling is visible at the top of the steps. On the landing are several pieces of pottery.
