An unidentified assistant (left) and the survival school students (L-R) Joel Turner, the instructor Harry Claflin, Allen Mons, Jack Madeley, Ron Venn, Brian Schwarz, and Marilyn Chandler stand around a campfire setup in a forested area. The assistant, who has the name "Henderson" embroidered onto his jacket, holds a cigarette in between his fingers. Claflin, a long-time U.S. military veteran and owner of the 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, also brings a cigarette to his mouth. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin also spent time studying the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
