Photograph caption dated April 12, 1963 reads, "Bishop Demetrios, spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox Church for the twelve Western states, portrays the role of Christ while commemorating the Last Supper. The 'Washing of the Feet' ceremony was held Thursday at the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles. Twelve priests representing Greek, Russia, Antiochian, Serbian, Rumanian and Ukrainian Orthdox [sic] Churches in the Southland enacted the role of Apostles. Each priest removed his right shoe and sock, then placed his foot in a bronze basin into which the Bishop had poured water from the ewer of hammered bronze."
