Description
Scrapbook/photo album created by the San Jose Exchange Club to document its Third and Fourth Annual Sunshine Specials for the children of San Jose and vicinity "who do not have the privileges that do our children." The 1951 event hosted 110 children at Camp Campbell near Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains. "The day began at 9:00 A.M. at St. James Park in the center of San Jose, where the children were given novelty hats and horns and assigned to the cars. The 25 car caravan, led by police escort, then proceeded down the mainstreet -- to the accompaniment of horns, whistles, and the delighted yells of the children." The 1952 event was held September 13, 1952, and followed the same program as the 1951 event. Children were selected by the County Welfare Department from Eastfield Home and St. Mary's of the Psalms at Mission San Jose. One of 15 scrapbooks created by the Exchange Club of San Jose documenting the organization's community service projects in the 1950s.
