Description
Seen here circa 1970, the unique design of the Bethel Temple sign at 565 Howe Avenue was especially effective at night, and from late 1964 until 1980 the glow mingled with the fog from the American River to cast an eerie light for motorists. Prior to 1964 the corner of Howe and Fair Oaks was agricultural land, primarily a fruit ranch and hop farm, but that changed forever when development began in earnest and all agriculture declined in the county. The Job's Daughters and Masonic Lodges have a long history in Sacramento, and currently three of the Bethel Lodges are based in Sacramento. By 1981 the property had become the home of the Capital Christian Education Center, and 565 Howe Avenue is currently a business block, home to a weight-loss center and fast food restaurants.
