Description
Photograph of the hangman's tree in front of a store in Coulterville, ca.1930. The large oak tree is at left, and it is leaning slightly to the right. Up a gentle slope and on the right is a grocery and dry goods store. There are three identical wooden doors and a smaller window in the brick wall. A sign to the left of the window reads "Prince Albert". One white man and three Mexican horse thieves are said to have been hanged here. On the same street at the opposite end of town there is another hangman's tree near the old Chinese quarters.
