Description
Detailed, close-up view of an appliqué piece with a blue bottom layer and red top layer. The motifs include the double snail paired in fours to create an elephant's foot. It is outlined by layers of borders around it. The house design is centered between the four double snail motifs in the center of the elephant's foot symbolic of family. White dotted seeds have been stitched into the blue outlines of the motifs with green and white fish scales stitched into the open red areas. This design is common in square pieces of textiles made for pillow cases, wall hangings, or tapestries. Typed label affixed to the mat board beneath the photograph reads, "Detail of modern needlework piece, center. Cut-and-reverse technique is often used by White HMong on the collars, coin belts, and coin bags. / -Pa Vue Khang, Sacramento. / (Paaj Vwj Khaab)." Handwriting to the right of label reads, "1983 / Lewis."
Date derived from inscription on mat board recto.
Notes on verso read: ""Detail reverse appliqué gabquj [sp?]-snail print, red/blue [handwritten red ink, bottom right verso]; HMong: Detail of Modern Needlework, Lewis Judy, *HMO.3521.00* Summer 2006 [printed label, bottom right verso] *writing is upside down""
