Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 San Pedro High's Hymie Solomon, better known as Jimmy Reese, was a baseball lifer, starting in 1917 as a bat-boy for the Los Angeles Angels, then as the second baseman for the '34 Angels, considered the best minor league team of all-time. As an infielder with the New York Yankees, he roomed with Babe Ruth, or, as he joked, with the Babe's suitcase. Later, as a coach with the California Angels, he became known for his fungo-hitting skills. By then, he had spent 78 years in professional baseball. He died in 1994. Photo dated: May 9, 1984.
