Photograph was edited for publication purposes Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated December 8, 1960 reads "Billy Edwards, 5, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Edwards, 14584 Dyer St., Sylmar, contributes his toy bomber to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. The plane is accepted by San Fernando Fire Chief Reed Van Bebber. Toys for Tots boxes will be located at fire stations throughout the Valley through Dec. 20 for collection of toys that will be distributed to needy children"
