Group photograph taken outside the first mission building at Itu, Calabar. The group is made up mainly of children with three adults in the back row. The mission building has clay walls and a thatched roof. Itu is situated beside Enyong Creek, a river within later day Nigeria. Mary Slessor, the Scottish missionary, carried out mission work in this area. In 1903 she brought two boys and a girl here to teach and conduct church services. She also built a school and a church here.
