He received his formal education at Oklahoma Baptist University and Phillips University. In 1938 he married Evelyn Lutman Fahnestock, a union which lasted more than 66 years. During their life together, they expanded their ministry from preaching in tents to preaching on the radio. Roberts became one of the forerunners on television and attracted a vast viewership. In 1947, Roberts resigned his pastorate to enter an evangelistic ministry to pray for the healing of the whole man. He has conducted more than 300 evangelistic and healing crusades on six continents and has appeared as a guest speaker for hundreds of national and international meetings and conventions. Further, he has written more than 120 books, including an autobiography. The University that bears his name was chartered in 1963 and accepted its first students in 1965. The campus now has 22 major buildings valued at more than $250 million. Over 5,000 students are enrolled in 61 undergraduate majors; 15 graduate level programs in business, education, and theology; and 2 doctoral level programs.
