Description
2 images. McIntyre addressing Loyola University, 25 March 1953. James Francis Cardinal McIntyre (at Loyola University).
Supplementary material reads: "Story pic caption. Loyola, Mar 24: His Eminence James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles, addresses the faculty and students of Loyola University at the formal convocation in his honor. Cardinal McIntyre thanked the assemblage for its expressions of loyalty and gifts to him and spoke briefly on the task ahead of the young men. 'All that you have been taught means that you stand for basic American principles', he declared, and called for 'an apostolate of thought as part of your crusade.' There is a great conflict in education today, he stated, because a large number will not accept absolute principles. When he was a young man, the Cardinal said, private colleges were founded on strict religious morality and principles and these principles were fundamental to the American way of life. Declaring that there had been a change for the worse in the last fifty years, which he attributed to the popularising [sic] of the philosophies of Hegel, Nietszche, Marx, etc., in this country, he stated that the common denominator of all these philosophies was the 'denial of absolute truth.' The Cardinal received a lavishly decorated scroll (spiritual bouquet) from the students of the University and a life membership placque [sic] from the Loyola Alumni Association."
