Text of signage number 22: This oblong precinct covering an extent of about 8.6 hectares is the city center of Polonnaruva and is fortified by wide and high brick ramparts on all four sides. Ruins of the royal palace, the council chamber and many other associated buildings could be seen here. The largest structure here is the seven storied palace of King Parākramabāhu the Great (1153-1186 AD). The monument with stone pillars to east of the palace is the council chamber named Raja Vaishyabhujanga Mandapa of King Parākramabāhu the Great (1153-1186 AD). The foundation seen in between the royal palace and the council chamber may be the basement of the palace built by King Vijayabahu the Great (1055-1110). Beyond the city wall on the south-east quarter is the Kumara Pokuna or Royal Bath made of stone.
