Description
Photograph of a view of "Piedras Pintada", or painted rock in the valley of the Carrizo Plains in San Luis Obispo County, July 1938. A man is shown on the bottom right, standing in front of an early automobile. The rock is pictured to the left, having formed so as to create a natural enclosure. The shape of the rocks themselves seem relatively smooth, although their surface may not be. White streaks can be seen at center on the far wall of the enclosure. Photoprint reads: "Contain ancient picture writings of undetermined meaning. When discovered by early Spaniards, Indians of that time knew nothing of their origin but regarded them with superstitious awe. Some authorities believe this was an ancient Indian temple".
