In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 9.
In the foreground train tracks curve into the photo; in the background center the end of a train sits on the tracks; in the left background is a broad tower; between the twoer and the train are trees and trees flank the train on the right.
Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento.
"The location was on the river-bank,just south of Front & R street, just back of where the large tree in the picture is shown.'The Passenger Depot was located at 3rd & R street' (Dir.of 1856) Work was first commenced on the Sacramento valley railroad, Feb. 12th, 1855, when the road ran from Sacramento to Folsom. In 1865, this branch was extended to Latrobe, El Dorado County, and later in 1888, extended to Placerville.This road was taken over by the Central Pacific R.R., later the present Southern Pacific Railroad."
