Description
This circa 1960 photograph shows the landmark Travelers Hotel at 428 J Street. Also visible is the Metropolitan Army Navy Surplus Goods at the northwest corner of Fifth and J Streets. Construction on the Travelers Hotel began in 1912 according to the design of Sacramento architectural firm Cuff & Diggs, owned by former state architect Maury Diggs and his partner Clarence Cuff. The hotel's directors at the time of its construction were J.W. Carmichael, J.C. Carly, Gus Turner, Adolph Heilbron, and James L. Flanagan, the Travelers Hotel's first manager. Diggs & Cuff lost their contract in March of 1913 after Maury Diggs' involvement in a prostitution scandal and associated legal action gave investors reason to believe he would not keep up with construction deadlines. They selected Washington J. Miller to finish work on the building, which opened in May of 1914. The Travelers Hotel operated for several decades before closing in the late 1970s. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still stands as of March 2020, though it has undergone heavy modification over the years.
